AA1723 Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a maximum length for a Toslink cable, as I need a 20m cable from
dvd player to amp.?
Yes, to save cost manufacture build down to a minimum standard. Your only option
is to buy a cable and see if it works, unfortunately we do not stock 20m Toslink
cables. We have found that 10m tends to be the upper limit.
To ensure the maximum chance of it working remember
- Obtain the largest diameter optical cable
- Ensure that there are no "tight" bends in the fibre optic (i.e.
do not bend it into the corners of your room!)
I am looking at the Toslink to Toslink connectors. Can you tell me what
the (2.2mm OD) (6mm OD) mean. What is the difference?
The difference is in the diameter of the fibre cable. The larger the diameter
the less attenuation (i.e. signal will travel further). But you can not bend a
larger diameter cable as tightly as s smaller diameter cable.
Is wiring your dvd player to your AV amp using optic leads better then using
high quality phono leads. If so please can you explain the advantages?
These optical links have a number of advantages compared to phono connectors
- Signal is immune from electrical interference
- No cross talk between audio signals
- Digital signal is preserved to amplifier
The only disadvantage could be the digital-to-analogue convertor in the amplifier.
