AA2806 Frequently Asked Questions
I have just bought a BFG 8600GTS OC 256MC, I installed it and it runs fantastic
but I am concerned as it came with one of these cable and I have no idea where
to plug it. I know the square end goes in the GPU but the two flat ends, where
do the go? If the go directly into the PSU I will need extra long on, if so where
do I get those?
The cable should plug into two of the 4 pin Molex connectors. These are usually
on cables from the PSU and were are used to power hard drives, CDs, DVD etc. before
the newer SATA standard. Even though the graphics card is working at present you
must use these extra connections. At worst, you could be destroying the motherboard
or the computer will be hanging or resetting itself. Some graphics card will limit
their performance and hence current requirements until you connect this cable.
If there are insufficient connectors from the PSU then you will need to upgrade
the PSU as you could be destroying this as well.
To limit damage and for the maximum performance we would not use the system
until we had connected this cable.
If I used this cable on a line that already contains a SATA disk drive will
it have enough juice left in it to run an Nvidia 7800GT and not drain the disk
drive?
The amount of juice available is depended upon your power supply and not the cable.
The cable can carry the current providing your power supply can supply it.
Can you tell if this cable is also suitable for agp cards, nvidia 7600gs.
As it looks lie the same six pin plug connector on the base of the card.
Yes, it is the correct cable.
Can you use this cable to power IDE HDD?
Yes, if the hard drive has a 6 pin power connector similar to those found on PCI
express graphic cards.
